SIRT Terminates Investigation into Injuries Sustained in RCMP Vehicle

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has terminated an investigation related to a male arrested on Sunday, January 21, 2024, in Saint-Antoine, New Brunswick. On that date, the Richibucto Detachment of the RCMP received a complaint of a disturbance in progress and reports that the male was in possession of a knife. He was arrested and during transport he suffered self-inflicted injuries. The SiRT attempted to investigate further; however, despite repeated efforts made by the SiRT to interview the man, he refused.

On this basis, the Interim Director of the SiRT found there was insufficient evidentiary foundation from which to continue with an investigation and the file has been closed.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
