SiRT Investigation Clears RCMP in Death of New Brunswick Man
The Interim Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe that members of the RCMP committed a criminal offence in connection with the death of a man in February 2023. On February 3, 2023, the RCMP Emergency Response Team (“ERT”) attended a man’s residence in St. Joseph-de-Madawaska to execute a search warrant and arrest him in relation to firearms offences. When officers arrived, the man fired a gunshot in their direction. Police used several techniques, including a negotiator and gas munitions, to try to have him safely removed from the residence. After several hours at the location and no response from the man, police entered the residence where they found him deceased by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The full report is available at Publications - Public Safety (gnb.ca) The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
