SiRT Investigating Police Shooting in Elsipogtog First Nation
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the discharge of a firearm by a member of the RCMP which resulted in the death of an adult Indigenous male from Elsipogtog First Nation.
In the early morning hours of September 9, 2024, the SiRT was contacted regarding a police shooting of a male in Elsipogtog First Nation, New Brunswick on September 8, 2024. Preliminary information suggests the following:
- The RCMP were called to an incident where a male was allegedly threatening to harm himself.
- Two officers responded and were approached by a male carrying weapons.
- One officer discharged a conducted energy weapon (CEW/Taser), but it was ineffective. The other officer discharged a firearm, striking the male. The male was pronounced deceased soon after.
In accordance with the Police Act, the RCMP contacted the SiRT which has assumed responsibility for the investigation. The SiRT investigation is ongoing, and there is limited additional information at this stage. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident may contact the SiRT at 1-855-450-2010.
The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
