SiRT Investigating Death
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the death of a male that occurred after interaction with police. Preliminary information suggests the following:
- On May 29, 2024, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were dispatched to a residence near Shediac, NB for a male in medical distress. Southeast RCMP were called to assist EMS.
- When police arrived, they entered the residence and located the male.
- An altercation ensued between police and the male and a taser was deployed.
- The male went into medical distress and EMS transported him to hospital where he later died.
Due to the death of the male, the SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.
The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
