SIRT Investigates Injuries Sustained During Arrest

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving serious injuries of an adult male that occurred during his arrest.

On July 24, 2024, the SiRT was contacted by the Cape Breton Regional Police Service. Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • Police were conducting surveillance on an adult male as part of on ongoing investigation.
  • Officers located the male in a vehicle on a dead-end street.
  • During the arrest, a struggle ensued, and the male sustained serious facial injuries and a fractured elbow.

Due to the serious injuries sustained by the male, the SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
