SiRT Investigates Death of Male in Police Custody
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating the death of a male who was in the custody of the Amherst Police on June 29, 2019.
In the early hours of June 29th, a 71-year-old male was arrested by Amherst Police for public intoxication. He was transported to the Amherst Police Department and lodged in cells. After noticing the man’s condition was deteriorating, EHS was contacted and the man was transported to the hospital where he passed away.
An autopsy will be performed by the Medical Examiner’s office today.
In accordance with the Police Act, the Amherst Police contacted SiRT and SiRT has assumed responsibility for the investigation. The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.
The team can independently launch or begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public. The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the investigation within three months of its completion.
