SiRT Investigates Allegations of Injuries Sustained During Arrest
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has commenced an investigation into an allegation of assault committed by Cape Breton Regional Police Officers.
On February 1st, 2021, CBRP contacted SiRT after receiving a letter from a third-party alleging the affected person had suffered serious injuries during his arrest on August 29, 2020.
A preliminary investigation was commenced on February 1, however, due to Covid-19 restrictions, SiRT Investigators did not have access to and were unable to speak to the affected person until March 30, 2021.
The team can independently launch an investigation or begin one after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the results of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
