SiRT Concludes Investigation into Officer Involved Shooting

The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe that Saint John Police Force officers committed a criminal offence in connection to an officer involved shooting.

The Saint John Police Force responded to a 911 call from a residential area in Saint John, regarding a male who was in possession of a knife and firearm. When police arrived on scene, the male pointed a firearm at the officer and advanced toward him. He did not respond to the officer’s commands to drop the weapon. In response, the officer deployed his firearm and shot the male in the leg. While the male was on the ground, he pointed his firearm at the officer and made attempts to stand up. A second officer, who had watched the incident unfold, drove his police vehicle into the male. Both officers immediately took the male into custody, called an ambulance, and administered first aid. The male was then transported to hospital and was later released.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
