Report Released in RCMP – Liverpool Pursuit Crash

An investigation by the province's Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has concluded there are no grounds for charges against an RCMP - Liverpool officer who pursued a motor vehicle in June.

Late in the morning of June 2, the officer was on the lookout for a truck driven by a 37 year old man accused of a domestic assault in Lunenburg.  The vehicle was located on Highway #103, and pursued south until Granite Village, Shelburne County. While the driver of the truck refused to stop, he drove at or near the speed limit throughout the pursuit. His intent was to cause himself harm, but not hurt anyone else.

In Granite Village, the male intentionally accelerated across the highway toward a guardrail, and flipped his truck, causing fractures to his ribs and back.  The officer was immediately on scene, and summoned assistance from EHS.  The male later acknowledged the officer acted appropriately throughout.

The investigation showed there was nothing about the officer’s driving that was dangerous. His actions were commendable and helped ensure prompt medical attention for the man. As a result, the Director has concluded there are no grounds to consider charges in this matter.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid after the conclusion of an investigation.
