Report released outlining charges against HRP officer
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) today released a report announcing the laying of charges including assault, public mischief and breach of trust against Cst. Laurence Gary Basso, a 37-year-old member of the Halifax Regional Police (HRP).
The charges relate to the arrest of a 54-year-old male on February 25, 2018 at the Metro Turning Point on Barrington Street in Halifax, who had been barred from the shelter for a period of 24 hours but refused to leave the outside of the building.
SiRT began its investigation into the matter after receiving a referral from the Halifax Regional Police on March 4, 2018.
On April 13, 2018, SiRT laid one charge of assault, one charge of public mischief and one charge of breach of trust against Cst. Laurence Gary Basso. The offences are alleged to have occurred on February 25, 2018. The matter is scheduled for trial on November 26 and 27, 2018.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione, who is solely responsible for decisions respecting the laying of any charge.
