Report Released in Annapolis Royal Police Pursuit - Crash

The province's Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has concluded that no charges will be laid against an Annapolis Royal Police officer who pursued a motor vehicle last December.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., December 23, 2012, the officer turned to follow a vehicle matching a report received about an impaired driver. The vehicle sped away, eventually losing control 2.1 kilometres down the road where it flipped onto its roof in the ditch. The male driver was injured, and the female passenger, who was nine months pregnant, lost her child as a result of the accident.

The police officer pursued at a speed slower than the pursued vehicle. The pursuit occurred on a road that was clear with good driving conditions.  The officer’s actions were reasonable in the circumstances, and an appropriate attempt to stop a reported impaired driver.
