Report Released in Amherst Police Post Custody Death
The province's Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has concluded that no charges should be laid against any officer with the Amherst Police Service in relation to a man who died shortly after being released from their custody.
In the early hours of June 29th, a 71-year-old male was arrested by Amherst Police for public intoxication. He was transported to the Amherst Police Department and a summary offense ticket (SOT) was issued. He was lodged in cells and was to be released when sober. However, while in cells, the man’s condition deteriorated. EHS was contacted and the man was transported to the hospital where it was determined he had suffered a stroke. He passed away the next day.
The Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be a stroke and the manner of death was classified as natural. No injuries were caused to the man during his arrest.
