RCMP Referral After Crash Turns Out to Not Require Investigation

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is no longer investigating a motor vehicle crash resulting in injuries to a suspect in an earlier incident where an RCMP officer was injured.

Shortly after 6 p.m., on Wentworth Road in Windsor, after conducting a traffic stop in relation to an earlier complaint, an RCMP officer was struck by a black Dodge Dakota truck with a roll bar and large mud tires with black rims.  The truck then fled the scene. About an hour later, RCMP located the truck on Highway 354 near Bull Meadows shooting range near Upper Rawdon in East Hants.  The truck did not stop for the officers, who then pursued the vehicle.  A short time later the truck left the road, crashing into woods.  The 19-year-old driver was taken into custody as a suspect in the original incident.  As he appeared to have a broken leg, EHS was contacted and the male was taken to hospital.

As a result of that apparent injury, the RCMP contacted SiRT within twenty minutes. SiRT investigators responded and began the investigation of the accident where the suspect was injured. However, more complete medical information several hours later confirmed that in fact the suspect did not suffer any injuries that meet SiRT’s definition of serious injury. As a result, SiRT has discontinued its investigation into the matter. 

The Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime unit is responsible for the ongoing investigation into the original incident.
