No Charges Against RCMP Officer

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) released its report today regarding an investigation into the June 1, 2022, incident involving a 16-year-old youth.

On that date, RCMP officers responded to a 911 call to attend a residence in the Annapolis Valley where a youth was on the rooftop of a basement doorway. The rooftop was located just below a second-floor bedroom. One of the officers was trying to talk the youth, who was in a highly agitated state, to come back inside when they fell off the rooftop to the ground below. The youth suffered a fractured ankle.

In their statement to the SiRT investigator, the youth stated that the officer did not cause them to fall off the roof and did not cause the injury to their ankle. Therefore, there are no grounds for any charges against the officer.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian interim director John Scott, who is solely responsible for decisions respecting the laying of any charge.
