No Evidence to Suggest Wrongdoing by Members of Cape Breton Regional Police

The province’s independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) released its report today regarding an investigation into an allegation of theft and property damage.

On February 1, 2021, SiRT was contacted by a member of the public, the Affected Party (AP) alleging, that on September 25, 2020, members of the Cape Breton Regional Police stole money, jewelry, and an all-terrain vehicle during a search of their property. They also claimed that officers damaged two of their vehicles during this same search. SiRT began an investigation into the matter that day.

The investigation found that the AP did not observe the alleged offenses and was unable to identify any specific officers as having committed the alleged offenses. It was also determined that the allegations of theft and damage to their property were based on the hearsay of two people known to the AP. Despite repeated attempts by the SiRT investigator to interview the parties, neither would cooperate with the investigation.

Therefore, based on the totality of the evidence gathered, there were no reasonable or probable grounds to believe that any of the officers involved committed a criminal offence.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia. Investigators are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione, who is solely responsible for decisions respecting the laying of any charges.
