No Charges Against RCMP Officer

The province’s Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) released its report today regarding an allegation of domestic assault committed by a female member of the RCMP.

 

On March 16, 2020, SiRT was contacted by the RCMP after an adult male, the Affected Party (AP) contacted an RCMP member known to him about an allegation of domestic violence.  The male alleged that the Subject Officer (SO) assaulted him on five-six occasions over a two-year period.

 

As part of the investigation, SiRT interviewed the AP, reviewed text messages exchanged between the AP and SO, and a 43-page letter sent to the SO by the AP. Other materials including audio recordings surreptitiously made by the AP during one of the incidents and after another incident were also analyzed.

 

The evidence does point to intimate partner violence occurring on several occasions during this relationship. However, the investigation determined that the behaviour of the AP indicated that he, not the SO, was the dominant aggressor.

 

Therefore, there are no grounds to consider any charge against the SO.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia. The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate a complaint received from the public.
