Domestic Assault Charges Laid Against Cape Breton Regional Police Officer
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) today laid two charges of assault against Cst. Kristopher Karl Planetta, a 34-year-old member of the Cape Breton Regional Police (CBRP).
On October 21, CBRP contacted SiRT about a domestic assault against a female by a CBRP officer. CBRP responded to the location and following a preliminary investigation, arrested the male. He was released without charge on an undertaking to refrain from contact with the female. SiRT attended and continued the investigation into the matter that day, conducting several interviews over the next few days.
As a result of the investigation two charges of assault against Cst. Planetta were laid today in Sydney Provincial Court. One relates to an incident alleged to have occurred on October 21, 2018, and the second involves an incident alleged to have occurred on February 19, 2017. The complainant in both charges is a 33-year-old woman.
Cst. Planetta is due to appear in Provincial Court in Sydney on December 11, 2018.
The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, which includes all allegations of domestic violence. All investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
