The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has charged Cst. Anthony George Sparks, a member of the Halifax Regional Police, with one count of theft under $5,000 under Section 334(b) of the Criminal Code.

The investigation commenced on August 12, 2018 following information received from Halifax Regional Police that an individual reported money had been stolen from his wallet during a traffic stop. Cst. Sparks will appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on October 9th for arraignment.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, including theft. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.

SIRT can independently launch an investigation or begin one after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia, or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the results of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
