SiRT Confirms Investigation into Arrest of Male in Chester
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) confirmed today that it will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a male for a domestic assault on the night of May 16, 2018.
At approximately 10 p.m. last evening RCMP responded to of a domestic assault in Chester. The RCMP were advised that the alleged perpetrator had left the residence armed with a loaded rifle and entered the wooded area near the residence. Police determined it was necessary to utilize the assistance of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) and a police service dog. With the assistance of the police service dog, the male was located and arrested. During the arrest, the male was bitten by the dog and was taken to hospital from treatment.
As a result, the RCMP contacted SiRT who have now confirmed the matter constitutes a serious incident that meets their mandate.
SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.
SIRT can independently launch an investigation or begin one after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia, or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the results of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
