Investigation opened into HRP contact with male
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has commenced an investigation into injuries suffered by a male who was being sought by Halifax Regional Police (HRP) officers.
Near midnight Thursday night, two HRP officers went to an apartment building on Galaxy Avenue, Dartmouth, looking to speak to a 32-year-old male who had allegedly failed to appear to serve a portion of his intermittent sentence. On arrival at the male’s apartment, the male came to the door and initially spoke to police. He then went back inside the apartment. He was found a short time later in a nearby parking lot under a motor vehicle. He had suffered injuries to his legs and was taken to hospital where he remains. As a result of the injury HRP contacted SiRT shortly afterwards, and SiRT has now assumed responsibility for the investigation into the circumstances leading to the injury.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact SiRT toll free at 1-855-450-2010.
The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
