No evidence to suggest illegal sales of contraband tobacco by member of Cape Breton Regional Police
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) today released its report regarding an investigation into the sale of contraband tobacco by a member of the Cape Breton Regional police to members of the public.
In early February 2016, Cape Breton Regional Police (CBRP) received source information that one of their police officers was involved in such sales activity. The information was passed on to SiRT who then enlisted the assistance of the Nova Scotia Compliance and Special Investigations Unit in conducting the investigation. The provincial CSI unit specializes in conducting investigations involving the illegal sale and distribution of contraband tobacco products.
Following an extensive investigation, utilizing several investigative techniques, no evidence was gathered that would lead to criminal charges against the subject officer.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian interim director John Scott, who is solely responsible for decisions respecting the laying of any charge.
