No Charges in Arrest of Woman by Cape Breton Police
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) released its report today regarding the investigation into a June 10, 2018 incident that lead to serious injuries sustained by a 22-year-old female.
On June 10 at approximately 10:30 p.m., Cape Breton Regional Police (CBRP) officers responded to a call from concerned family members about a female threating to harm herself.
Once on scene, police noted the female was confused and incoherent and made the decision to arrest her under provisions of the Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act. She was then transported to Cape Breton Regional Hospital for assessment.
Upon arrival at the hospital, she fled custody from the police, jumped over a pony wall and landed on the roof below. She regained her balance and continued running until she jumped off the end of the roof. She sustained two broken legs and two compressed discs.
The young woman’s injuries occurred from jumping off the rooftop. Her decision to run was made in an effort to escape police. The officers did pursue the young woman; however, they were unable to reach her before she jumped over the wall. Therefore, there are no grounds for any charges against either officer.
