Investigation Opened into North Sydney Motor Vehicle Crash

At approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, a member of the Cape Breton Regional Police (CBRP) was travelling east on King St. in North Sydney when he observed a car headed west driving fast and erratically. It was reported to SiRT that the officer pulled his vehicle over and activated his emergency equipment intending on conducting a traffic stop of the car. However, the car was soon out of sight of the officer. He then de-activated his emergency equipment and attempted to locate the vehicle. About 10 minutes later the car was found overturned off the road on Johnson Road. The three occupants of the car were standing on the side of the road. The driver had very serious injuries to his hand. 

As a result of the injuries CBRP contacted SiRT this morning, at which time SiRT assumed responsibility for investigation into the circumstances of the attempted stop.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing.

The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
