Investigation Opened into Injury Suffered by Robbery Suspect in New Glasgow

The Serious Incident Response Team has commenced an investigation into how a 20-year-old male robbery suspect in New Glasgow suffered a serious injury to his knee early on Thursday morning, March 10.

At approximately 2 a.m. this morning, police responded to a convenience store robbery in New Glasgow.  They received information that three young males may be responsible. A short time later members of the New Glasgow Regional Police, assisted by members of the Stellarton Police, located what they believed were the three males. Two were apprehended, while one ran off. When the third male was later located and arrested he had suffered a serious injury to his knee. He was transported to the Aberdeen Hospital and later taken to hospital in Halifax where he has been admitted for treatment to his knee.

As a result of the serious injury the New Glasgow Regional Police contacted SiRT this morning, which has commenced its investigation into the matter at that time.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
 
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
