Investigation commences regarding Domestic Violence allegations made against CBRP officer

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has commenced an investigation into domestic violence allegations made against an off duty male member of the Cape Breton Regional Police (CBRP).

CBRP contacted SiRT this morning, August 1, to report two incidents of alleged domestic violence between the male officer and his girlfriend.  At approximately 12:30 a.m., Saturday morning, CBRP responded to a disturbance at the Dominion Fire Hall.  After removing the officer from that incident they later received information that alleged he had assaulted his girlfriend while at the Fire Hall.   At approximately 2 a.m., they received further information about a second alleged assault involving the officer and the same woman, this time occurring on the street near Fat Boy’s Pizza in Dominion.  Police subsequently located the officer and placed him in custody.   SiRT was then contacted, at which time SiRT assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
