Dec
11

Shortly before 7:00 this morning the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), was contacted by the RCMP in relation to an officer involved shooting on Hwy 101 near Berwick, Nova Scotia.

At approximately 4 a.m., an officer with the Kings District RCMP conducted a traffic stop on Hwy. 101 for a Motor Vehicle offence.  While the vehicle was stopped, an incident took place between the officer and the male driver and a firearm was discharged.

The male driver fled the scene on foot into nearby woods.

When the male suspect was found by officers a short-time later, it appeared that the male had sustained a non-life-threatening injury. He was transported to hospital for assessment and medical treatment. He was released from the hospital and remains in custody awaiting a court appearance.

As the investigation continues, SiRT is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to please contact them at 1-855-450-2010 with any information they may have.

SiRT is responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.
