Investigation Begins into Death of Truro Man

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating the death of a man who was suspected of killing his wife.
 
Around 3:00 a.m. on October 16, the Colchester County RCMP received information that a woman was killed and an armed man was in his vehicle in Portapique, Nova Scotia, near the beach.

The RCMP responded to the scene of the alleged killing, and began investigating that matter. They also responded to the scene of the man in his vehicle. He was reported to have two firearms in his possession.  Discussions went on throughout the day between RCMP negotiators and the man.  However, at approximately 6 p.m. the man took his own life.
 
As a result of the death of the man, in accordance with the Police Act, the RCMP contacted SiRT immediately, who have assumed responsibility for the investigation into his death.
 
The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.
 
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
