Investigation Begins into Allegations Against Cape Breton Regional Police Member

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating allegations against a member of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service (CBRPS) made by his former common law partner.

On the evening of November 10, 2014, the CBRPS received a complaint from a female alleging that her former partner, a male member of the CBRPS, had taken items from her home. Police responded to the call and had contact with both parties that evening. Police were again called on the evening of November 11 after a separate interaction between the parties.

As a result of the incidents, SiRT was contacted and has assumed responsibility for the investigation into these matters.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
