Investigation into Attempted Stop of Motorcycle by HRP Commenced

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a motorcycle crash that followed an attempted traffic stop by the Halifax Regional Police (HRP) today, June 9.

Shortly before 11 a.m., an HRP member initiated a traffic stop of a motorcycle near the intersection of Valleyfield Road and Tacoma Drive in Dartmouth.  The motor cycle sped off, and crashed a short distance away.  The 20-year-old male driver appears to have suffered broken bones, and other non-life threatening injuries, and has been taken to hospital.  As a result of the injuries, HRP contacted SiRT very shortly after the incident, who have assumed the investigation in relation to the attempted traffic stop and subsequent crash. SiRT investigators attended the scene this morning.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
