Halifax Regional Police Officer Under Investigation for Alleged Sexual Assault
The Province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) today announced its investigation of a member of the Halifax Regional Police for an alleged sexual assault.
On December 21, 2017, SiRT received information from Halifax Regional Police who advised they had received a complaint concerning the alleged actions of a male police officer in relation to an adult female. The incident is alleged to have occurred while the officer was on duty in May of 2012.
The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, which includes all allegations of domestic violence. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian Interim Director John Scott.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
