Coxheath Pursuit by CBRP Investigated
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has commenced an investigation into the pursuit of a motor vehicle in Coxheath, Cape Breton, Saturday night that led to a single vehicle crash.
Shortly after 9:30 p.m., members of the Cape Breton Regional Police responded to complaints received from community members in relation to a motor vehicle containing three young adult males. Police located a car matching the description of the vehicle and attempted to stop it. It failed to stop, and a short time later the vehicle left the road and was extensively damaged. One male passenger was ejected from the car, while two other males were extracted with the assistance of the jaws of life.
One male, 24, suffered a fractured femur and other injuries and was flown to Halifax for treatment where he remains in hospital. Another 25 year old male suffered a fractured sternum and remains in hospital in Sydney, as does the third male, also 25, with serious injuries.
As a result of the injuries the matter was reported to SiRT within minutes of the crash. Once injuries were confirmed a short time later SiRT began its investigation of the matter.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
