SiRT Investigating Serious Injury

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the serious injury of a man that occurred during his arrest by Bathurst Police.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • July 23, 2022, police were called to a residence in Bathurst, NB related to someone in distress.
  • While on scene, an altercation occurred between the male and the police officers.
  • The male was arrested and sustained a broken arm.
  • Emergency Medical Services were contacted, and the male was admitted to hospital.

The SiRT was contacted by a member of the public on March 22, 2024. Due to the serious injury, the SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
